Kiri kaeshi. This basic drill of kendo practice is excellent training for the whole body. It involves such fundamentals as gripping the shinai, maintaining proper interval with the opponent, and footwork. Other important aspects of kiri kaeshi are tai atari (body check), ki ken tai i-chi (spirit, sword, body unity), and zan shin (focused mind). Performed by David Harrison and Andres Cruz.
Kendo Kata (Ippon mei - Nanahon mei). This practice is the traditional form of kendo. It traces its roots to the methods of teaching used by samurai. These kata are paired exercises that demonstrate the fundamental techniques and theories of kendo. They are drawn from the tradtional schools of swordanship and standardized into a set curriculum. Here we see the seven kata using the katana.
